I wanted to get a little personal with all of you today. There recently has been an incident that happened inside my community that breaks my heart. I just want to share my perspective on the situation and talk about how it makes me feel. While also keeping this professional.
The university I attend had an incident break out having to do with racism amongst roommates. A lot of things happened that I wish to not share due to the disgusting matter. But there are a few things that I feel that I need to discuss and get off my chest. When I first found out about the incident that occurred in my community I had tears in my eyes and felt sick to my stomach. I had no clue what I could do in the situation and I need to speak out. Being silent is not an option.
Racism Unfortunately, it hurts my heart to say this but racism does still exist in our society today. There are so many problems that stem from racism. It is an absolutely disgusting thing that people are taught. My view on this is that humans are humans. No matter what color your skin is everyone is human. I love everyone and anyone, no matter what color their skin is. I will and do not tolerate racist remarks. The society that we live in today is accepting of so many different topics and there is less racism in our society today but it still is an issue. I will not be silenced about this topic. As a future educator, I want to teach children that all humans are equal no matter what the color their skin is.
Women Against Women As a woman- I think it is appalling that a woman would do something vindictive to another woman. We now have more recognition in society but we are still seen as less than a man. I am and have always been a supporter of other women. I want to see my fellow women in society out there being successful. That is one reason why I am so happy to be surrounded by some amazing women bloggers that support each other. Hearing that a woman in my community does not respect another woman I am ashamed and appalled. We need to be supportive of one another. Because in the end, we as females can do the impossible.
This incident also has to do with roommates, which raises up the topic of college. I want to share my experience with this topic to help others. I have had two different roommates and have had two very different experiences with them. My first roommate was an international student from Germany. Who now to do this day is still one of my best friends. At the time of us living with one another, we did not always see eye to eye. We came from very different cultures. But at the end of the day when we were living with one another, we had a mutual respect for each other and never disrespected each other in a vindictive manner. My second experience with a roommate was my freshmen year of college. We were best friends going into college and had a bump in our friendship which lead us to not speaking for a while. But since not living with each other we have rekindled our friendship. What I am trying to get out of sharing my personal experience is to show you that roommates do not always get along. But at the end of the day, you still have to have respect for one another and for their belongings.
There are so many things that disgust me with the situation that happened at my university. But as of last night, I feel that we are going to work together as a community to improve upon the racism and women supporting one another. I hope that I see major change in my community and see improvements. I will not stand down or be silenced. I will rise up and discuss this and work towards making my surroundings a better place.
I hope that you all do not mind me getting a little bit more personal. When I hear about incidents like this it really does break my heart. I want to be the change in the world. In order to do that we have to be proactive and speak about these topics. If you have anything to say at all about this please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
