Right now, I am at a time in my life that has proven to be very stressful and overwhelming. Let me break it down for you all so that you can see what I have happening in my life. I go to school full time, Monday through Friday. I also work a part time job which is close to twenty-five hours a week. I then add in managing my blog (I mean obviously!) family life, friends, and my mental health. After writing all of that it makes me even more stressed out and tired.
As you may or may not know my classes started back up on August 29. I was sick the weekend before and I miraculously recovered and felt a lot better. I went through the first week went to all my classes and did great and was feeling fine. Then Labor Day weekend came along and I was feeling great. I went to a cookout with my friends and I ate a ton of food and then headed off to work. That night I woke up super sick and my head hurt so much. When I woke up with my alarm Tuesday morning there was no way that I could make it through a full day of classes and a four-hour shift at work. I had to take a sick day from both. Taking this sick day so early in the school year has honestly made me feel so far behind.
I want to talk to you all about some tips that can help you catch up when you feel like you are so far behind. The tips I am going to share are more focused on catching up in school since that is what I personally am going through.
- Email/ Talk to your Professor
This is probably one of the biggest tips that I can give you. If I can’t make it in for a day of classes because I am sick I send my professors a quick email. This just shows to your professor that you actually do care that you are missing a class. It looks more professional and your professor will appreciate it.
- Read over your Syllabus
All my classes either have a syllabus that was printed and given to us or online. If I know that I am taking a sick day I look at my syllabus so I can see what lesson that I am going to be missing. Also, I can see what the corresponding homework is. So even though I am missing the class discussion I can still work on the homework to gain the same knowledge.
- Reach out to a friend in the class
Luckily, this is pretty easy for me. I have one of my best friends in almost all of my classes. Since I missed class last week I texted her and she let me know throughout the day what I was missing and any work that I was going to have to make up. Having someone you can reach out to and find out what you miss is ESSENTIAL. A professor is not always going to be nice and tell you what you need to do. Even if you don’t have a best friend in your class make sure to at least have one person in each of your classes that you can text or dm if you end up missing.
- Take a day over the weekend to play catch up
You cannot deny the fact that you will fall behind if you miss a day of class. There is no way to sugar coat it. But this also means only skip if you are really sick. (No, skipping because you’re tired is not a good excuse!) Taking a day over the weekend to play catch up will be essential. You have material that you are going to have to get up to speed on. For me taking a day over the weekend is the best solution because I have the most time then. It also helps if you sit down and write down the work you have to catch up on. I use my agenda to write down all my work and it helps to keep you organized!
- Deep breaths
Getting stressed out or overwhelmed is NOT going to help. I repeat it will NOT help. I get stressed all the time and it does absolutely nothing to help you. You will spend more time getting worried than getting work done. Whenever I get overwhelmed I take a couple of deep breaths to help and center me. When I am centered then I can focus and be productive. Being stressed is not good and it does not do anything good for you or your health for that matter.
I hope that my tips can help you if you feel like you are falling behind in school. It is essential to stay healthy so that you don’t fall behind, but sometimes things just happen. If you are going through it too, just remember I am in the same boat as you girl and we GOT THIS!
